Brandon Runyon
Head Coach Swimming
He's coached the Berean Swim Team since 2012, though his time as a swim coach started much earlier. He's worked as a swim coach, in one capacity or another, since 2000 and has coached a myriad of levels and ages. One of his favorite aspects of Swimming, as a sport, is the dichotomy presented through the individual nature of the sport and the absolute necessity for a strong team. Whilst in the water, the athlete is alone, competing most directly against self, always chasing a new personal best, but it is the comradery of the team unified in the grueling practices, the early morning workouts, the strain swim can put on every muscle of the body that ultimately keeps a swimmer going.
At Berean, he seeks to create a team that is built firmly on the foundation of Christ with the knowledge that we do all things to glorify Him who first loved us, and that with the love and support of each individual member of the team, the athlete will succeed. To his, success is much more than achieving a new record or personal best, though important, not the metric he gauges his swimmers by. It is his desire to instill in these athletes an attitude of commitment, perseverance, and dedication, traits that transcend sport, but are crucial in the development of a strong student or member of the workforce, a loving spouse, and a devoted parent. He aims to demonstrate, teach, and hold his athletes to a life dedicated to the commitments they make and to persevere through the challenges life puts in our way to do so, and this starts, first and foremost, with our relationship with the Lord.
Since he was appointed to this role at Berean Christian High School, he has coached an unbeaten Girls Team, a number of All-League swimmers, taken a great many swimmers to NCS championships, as well as coached Berean's first State Champion level swimmer, who succeeded in becoming 9th overall in the state of California. But more than that, he has developed a long list of teams that have grown in their faith and devotion to the Lord, and have been the recipient of countless emails and letters from competing teams, athletes, and parents about the love Berean Swim has shown their swimmer, the joy their swimmer had in being able to pray before a meet for the first time, and the tremendous amount of sportsmanship, care, and heart these athletes demonstrate daily, and to Coach Runyon, that is paramount to the accolades.
He looks forward to having you on the Berean Swim Team.
